03 / THE COURSE
Some courses make an impression before you strike a ball.

When W. G. Tarrant acquired the estate in 1911, he entrusted Harry Colt with its golf course. It opened on 2 October 1913. Today, three loops of nine wind through heathland, with fairways following the natural contours and the clubhouse surveying the course from its highest point.
Colt mapped out the holes through woodland before the trees were cleared. Much of his original routing endures, giving the course a sense of belonging to the landscape.

Before play, join our Top 100 course historian and architect for a private introduction to St George’s Hill.
Discover the club’s heritage, the thinking behind Harry Colt’s layout and the details that reward a closer look.
The briefing will also offer an insight into how Top 100 courses are assessed, with selected features to look out for during your round.
A few prompts to take into your round.
Watch how each hole sits within the slopes. Before choosing a club, consider what the ground asks of the shot as well as the distance.
Notice the bunkers and the entrance to each green. Ask yourself where you would most like to play your next shot from.
Look back occasionally. The woodland, heather and clubhouse create a different perspective as you move through the course.
The club’s illustrated history of Colt’s design reveals that the original first green stood on a higher plateau to the right. It moved to lower ground in the 1930s. The ninth retains its distinctive heather banks and diagonal fairway bunker, reminders of how much of the early design survives.
